The giant sandstorm, whose dimensions seemed to increase all the time, leapfrogged over the road in front of the motel. It zoomed upward in some sort of draft. Then it just as quickly zoomed downward into the motel parking lot where May was still standing.

May raced toward the lobby. Joker turned tail and ran, too. In a sprint he was faster than she was, though her parents were hanging out the door encouraging her on.

First she felt the small, delicate hairs on the back of her neck standing up on end. The thicker hair on the top of her head followed. It felt as if something were picking her up by the scruff of her neck. Her feet actually lost contact with the ground.

Just as quickly as it had picked her up, the wind dropped May. She landed on the pavement, where she bruised her elbow.

The wind continued right above the ground. It seemed to be pulling her head off and running its cyclone-like fingers through her hair, yanking at it until it hurt. It seemed to want to pull it out by its roots.

May screamed and screamed and screamed.
